Overview

Properly operating and securing doors with the right latches, catches, door guards and bolts is essential for safety and convenience. Each offering has unique benefits for different door types and requirements.

When choosing hardware, consider the door type, security level, installation ease, and aesthetics. To learn more, check out our 101 FAQs information.

Ives has multiple roller latches and catches that assure a door will stay closed when not in use. These accessories will not keep a door secure and are not meant for security applications; they only help keep a door closed. Ives also offers a variety of surface bolts and door guards to provide an additional security level.

Surface bolts: Surface bolts are mounted on the surface of the door and are used to secure the door in a closed position by sliding the bolt into a strike plate or keeper on the door frame or floor.

Advantages:

- Easy to install as they are mounted on the surface of the door

- Versatile and can be used on various types of doors, including double doors, French doors, and cabinets

- Available in different lengths and finishes to match door hardware

Dutch door bolts: Dutch door bolts are specifically designed for Dutch doors, which are split horizontally into two sections that can be operated independently. The bolt is used to secure the top and bottom sections of the door together, allowing them to function as a single unit when desired. It is typically installed on the inside edge of the bottom half of the door.

Advantages:

- Allows flexibility in operating the top and bottom sections of the Dutch door independently or as a single unit

- Provides additional security by locking the two sections together

Mortise door bolts: Mortise door bolts are installed within a mortise cut into the edge or face of the door, making them concealed when the door is closed.  The bolt is operated by a thumb turn or key and slides into a strike plate or keeper installed in the door frame or floor.

Advantages:

- Concealed installation provides a clean, unobtrusive look

- More secure than surface bolts, as the mechanism is hidden within the door

Roller latches: The most common application for a roller latch is on a closet door where positive latching is not required. A roller strike is a different piece of hardware.  Often used with panic hardware and fire exit hardware, roller strikes are mounted on the frame, and the panic hardware latches into the strike to secure the door in the closed position.

Invisible latches: Invisible latch is ideal for installations where no visible latch or strike is desired. Unit can be installed at the top, bottom or side of the door. Can be mortised into the stop or surface mounted to the stop. Recommended for use on small panels, cabinet doors or lightweight doors. Not recommended for use on hollow lightweight doors with single point access to area.

Magnetic catches: Utilize a magnet to hold the door in a closed position. A metal plate is attached to the door, and a magnetic catch is mounted on the door frame. When the door closes, the magnet attracts the metal plate, keeping the door securely shut. Best for lightweight doors and cabinets.

Roller catches: Use a spring-loaded roller mechanism to hold the door in place.  A roller catch is mounted on the door frame, and a strike plate is attached to the door. When the door closes, the roller compresses and then snaps into place on the strike plate, holding the door shut. Often suitable for medium-weight doors.

Ball catches: Utilize a spring-loaded ball mechanism to hold the door in place. A ball catch is installed in the door, and a strike plate is mounted on the door frame. When the door closes, the ball compresses and then snaps into a recess in the strike plate, holding the door shut. Often suitable for medium to lightweight doors, commonly used in closet and cabinet doors.

Privacy Door Guard: For interior corridor openings, ensuring privacy and quiet operation. Modern design with various finishes. Padded latch for quiet operation. ADA compliant and fire safety compliant.

Solid Bar Door Guard: For exterior doors flush with frames, providing security. Solid bar interlocks with a ball on the strike plate for viewing.

Hinged bar can be moved 180° away when not in use. Edge protection plate and strike plate designed to prevent marring.

Chain Door Guard: Suitable for doors needing a simple and quick security solution. Narrow chain holder to prevent marring. Welded twist link steel chain. Allows partial door opening for viewing.
