Overview

Flush bolts are essential for securing the inactive leaf of double doors, with one bolt striking into the head of the frame and another into the floor. Strikes, the metal plates receiving these bolts, must be properly aligned and compatible for effective operation. Coordinators ensure double doors with closers close in the correct sequence, with the inactive leaf closing before the active leaf for proper latching and security. Understanding these basics and selecting the right components ensures your doors are secure, compliant with safety standards, and durable. View our 101 FAQs for detail.

Improved Security: Offer an additional locking point, enhancing door security

Stability: They help maintain alignment and prevent warping, especially in double doors

Aesthetics: Their concealed nature maintains the door's sleek appearance

Versatility: Suitable for various door types and settings

Manual Extension Flush Bolts: Manually retract and extend the bolts using a small lever. Available for both wood and metal doors. Metal door flush bolts have longer rods, making them easier to reach and operate. Wood door flush bolts can sometimes weaken the door's top corner and are harder to reach.

Self-Latching or Constant Latching Flush Bolts: Combine manual retraction with automatic latching. The top bolt is manually retracted and automatically re-latches when released. Ideal for doors that require constant latching without manual intervention.

Automatic Flush Bolts: Automatically retract and extend without manual operation. When the active leaf opens, the bolts retract, and when it closes, the bolts automatically latch. Suitable for high-traffic areas where ease of use and security are paramount.

Strikes are the metal plates installed on the door frame or floor that receive the bolt from the flush bolt, ensuring the door remains securely closed. The proper alignment and installation of strikes are crucial for the effective operation of flush bolts. Strikes must be compatible with the type of flush bolts being used and should meet any fire rating or security requirements.

Coordinator Bar: Installed at the head of the frame, it coordinates the closing sequence of the doors. Triggers on either end of the bar hold the inactive door open until the active door pushes the trigger to close. Commonly used on fire-rated double doors with specific closing and latching requirements.

Gravity Coordinator: Prevents the active door from closing until the inactive door bypasses. The closing of the inactive door causes a strike plate to contact a cam and lift the arm, allowing the active door to close. As the inactive door continues closing, a roller rides over the strike plate onto a door bracket, holding the arm above the active door.

Filler Bars: Used with the bar coordinator to cover the entire length of the stop, maintaining architecturally clean lines. Available in three sizes for variable frame openings. FL filler bars are field-sized to fit the frame opening.

Carry Bar:  Prevents the inactive door from being opened before the active door, which could cause damage.  Equipped with a nylon roller to ensure quiet and efficient operation.

Mounting Brackets:  Used with coordinator bars to prevent interference with parallel arm closers. They ensure the fasteners for the closers do not damage the coordinator bar's internal mechanism.

Door Compatibility: Consider your door's material, thickness, and style

Security Needs: Assess the level of security required

Aesthetic Preferences: Choose a flush bolt that matches your door and room aesthetics

Installation: Professional installation ensures a correct fit and optimal functionality
