Overview

When considering door protection, most people think of kick plates, but protection plates come in various sizes and types to safeguard the door's face. Ives offers four types of protection plates: mop plates, kick plates, stretcher plates, and armor plates.  By using these protection plates, you can significantly extend the life of your doors and reduce maintenance costs, ensuring both durability and functionality. Learn more about the different types, common applications and more with our 101 FAQs.

A protection plate is a type of hardware installed on doors to safeguard them from damage caused by regular use, cleaning equipment, carts, or foot traffic. These plates are typically made from durable materials such as stainless steel, brass, or aluminum and come in various sizes and styles to meet different protection needs.

Durability: Made from strong materials to withstand heavy use and prevent damage.

Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for frequent door repairs or replacements.

Aesthetic Appeal: Maintains the appearance of doors by preventing scuffs, scratches, and dents.

Versatility: Available in various sizes and styles to fit different types of doors and usage scenarios.

Kick Plates: Protects the push side of a door from scuffs and damage caused by foot traffic. Generally 8 to 24 inches tall and 22 to 48 inches wide. A common size is 10" x 34" for 3'0" wide doors. Recommended for doors subject to typical use, especially those with closers installed.

Armor Plates: Provides extensive protection for the lower half of the door from abuse by hand carts, trucks, and other rough usage. Ranges from 26 to 48 inches high and 22 to 48 inches wide.

Installation: Can be installed on both the push and pull sides of the door. Ensure the height does not conflict with the door's locking or latching hardware; options may be available to notch the plate around the hardware.

Mop Plates: Designed to protect the bottom of the pull side of a door from cleaning and mopping or vacuum procedures. Typically 4 to 6 inches high and 22 to 48 inches wide. Commonly used in areas with frequent cleaning to prevent damage from mops and cleaning equipment.

Stretcher Plates: Protects the middle section of the push side of the door from damage caused by stretchers or service carts. Typically 6 to 8 inches high and 22 to 48 inches wide. Commonly found in hospitals and health care facilities to prevent damage at a specific height above the floor.

All plates, metal and plastic, come standard with four beveled edges and countersunk mounting holes (B-CS)

1. Determine if fire-rated protection plate (8400) is required or standard (8402).  Plates over 16 inches tall must be visibly labeled as fire-rated if used on fire-rated doors; plates 16 inches or less do not require labeling. For 8402 UL Plates, UL mark appears in upper left corner. Not available on plastic protection plates (special cutouts are not allowed on UL kick plates).

2. Select material substrate and finish (brass, stainless steel, aluminum or plastic (view Ives catalog or pricebook for full finish offering).

3. Determine sizing: The industry standard is to specify protection plates 1 inch less than the height of the bottom rail and 2 inches less than the nominal door width. For armor plates, ensure the height does not conflict with the door's locking or latching hardware; options may be available to notch the plate around the hardware.

4. Select any additional options:

- Specify B-NH for no mounting holes (Not available on 8402. Available with US32D, US32, US3, US4, US28, CLR, P-BLK only)

- Specify B-NHA for no mounting holes with adhesive (Not available on 8402)

- Specify ERS prepped with extra row of screws

-  Special Cut-outs are available as engineering special, consult customer service

5. Select available accessories:

 - Gasket tape kit tape is recommended when using a brass plate on a metal door to reduce tarnishing from electrolytic oxidation. One tape pack will cover the perimeters of a 8" x 34" kickplate. (Order 8401 gasket tape)

Proper care for your protection plates is essential to maintain their appearance and functionality. Regular cleaning and maintenance prevent rust and wear, even for materials with excellent corrosion resistance like stainless steel. Here are some steps and tips to keep your plates in pristine condition:

1.  Wipe off excess dry dirt with a dry cloth to avoid wetting and spreading the dirt.

2. Use warm soapy water to wash away remaining dirt. Avoid abrasive sponges to prevent scratching.

3. Optional Polishing: After washing, use a good domestic glass cleaner and a soft cloth to polish and restore their shine.

4. Removing Stains or Discoloration: Use a metal polish for minor stains. Do not use sandpaper or steel wool, as they can scratch and damage the surface.

5. Avoid Harsh or Corrosive Cleaners: Refrain from using mineral acids, salt solutions, or chloride-based cleaners like bleach, as they can cause corrosion. Avoid hard abrasive scouring powders.
