The spring-loaded plunger ensures the strike hole remains clean by returning to floor or threshold level anytime the flush bolt is retracted. 

The Ives DP2 Dust Proof Strike is designed to receive a bottom flush bolt, making it ideal for installations without a threshold, though it can also be used with a threshold by omitting the faceplate.
